The Entertainer recently had the chance to talk with one of the members of the band Best For Last. The resulting question and answer session is provided for your reading enjoyment.
ENTERTAINER: When did you first become interested in music?
DAVID: We all became interested in music at a young age. Being raised in churches that played lively music helped us realize our talents. Me, being the oldest member and founder of the band, started playing drums and then trombone for jazz, marching and concert bands. I then moved on to play acoustic guitar for several organizations. Continuing my love of guitar, I started the rock band X-It. Since then, Ive been in at least four other bands ranging from Christian Rock, Funk and Jazz. I recorded my first album while a member of Coming Rain and in 2004, produced and arranged my own solo album, Outer Courts. Im now playing electric guitar in Best For Last and have written a lot of music for the band.
Daniel has been involved in music for more than a decade, playing guitar, bass, drums, and piano. His musical career started out in the worship teams of small churches in the Tri-Cities area. He then went on to play bass in a Christian rock band called Back to One. Daniel went on to get his degree in Music Ministry from Brownsville Revival School of Ministry in Pensacola, Fl. He is currently a music teacher and now plays bass for the band.
Aaron started out playing the pots and pans to music when he was just a small child and started playing the piano and drums in early elementary school. As well as being an accomplished drummer, he has composed and performed many songs on the piano which have caught the ear of the state of Washington. He was a member of the Bram Brata steel drum band and now plays drums for the Best For Last.
Music to us is another form of communication. If you come to our concert, you will hear our instrumental conversations. We all feel that anyone can say what they mean by singing, but our joy is in playing what we want to say.
ENTERTAINER: What is the style of music that you play?
DAVID: Our music comes from a variety of styles, blended to produce rock and funk instrumental creations. If you listen for a while you will hear sounds of Joe Satriani mixed with Victor Wooten and Gregg Bissonette. Our individual backgrounds from playing in churches forced us to learn to play multiple styles ranging from country, blues, jazz, calypso and rock. Each of us has been shaped by our exposure to playing in various groups like marching bands, jazz bands, steel drum bands, and rock bands. We are a jam band at heart and most of the music we play is all original.
ENTERTAINER: What are you currently working on?
DAVID:: Our latest work has been to mix some complex chording and off beat drumming with creamy distorted solos. We are in the process of getting our first album out and hope to have it completed by January, 2007.
ENTERTAINER: What has been your greatest memory as musicians?
DAVID: We love to entertain and play for people. We rock hard and funk it up. Our greatest memories are those of having played for people and watching their response to our music. Also, our practice times and jam sessions of creating new music keeps us coming back for more.
ENTERTAINER: What does the future hold for your career?
DAVID: Only God can answer that but if you ask us, we want to entertain as many people as we can. No matter what happens to the band, we will all be playing music untill we leave this earth and more than likely where we are going too. Our plan is to play the Northwest scene and branch off as opportunities come around. If a large recording company sponsored us, we would definitely ride the circuit.
ENTERTAINER: Is there anything else youd like to add?
DAVID: Best for Last has no pride in individuals or ourselveswe just love to play music and meet the people who enjoy it along with us. We hope we see all of you at our next concert!
ENTERTAINER: Thanks go to Best For Last for giving us this opportunity to get to know the band and their music. The Entertainer wishes them the best in their musical endeavors!
