The Entertainer recently had the chance to sit down with Colorblind. The resulting question and answer session is provided to introduce you to the band and dig a little deeper into why they do what they do.
ENTERTAINER: When did you first become interested in music?
BUDDY: I started playing the drums when I was six years old. My mother forced me to join a marching team that had drummers and baton twirlers. We would march in Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans. That was pretty exciting being apart of the whole parade scene at that age. People lined along the street clapping and dancing to the drum cadenceIve been hooked every since.
BILL: I became interested at the age of twelve.
JOHN: When I heard my first Beatles song. Isnt that when everybody wanted to be a musician?
DAVE: Ive been interested in music since I was old enough to stand on my dads amp and sing every Elvis song he could play. Ive been singing and performing since I was seven years old and Ive never been afraid to sing in front of anyone.
MIKE: I was born into music. My entire family are singers and most of them also played an instrument so you can imagine growing up in an environment like that. Still today, my brothers and sisters will get together with all our families and just have a blast.
ENTERTAINER: What is the style of music that you play?
BUDDY: We have labeled ourselves as a classic rock band, but we do much more than that. Personally, I tend to favor rock with a swampy edge.
BILL: Rock and roll with emphasis on a driving guitar sound. I like a full sounding amplifier that produces not only the sound from the guitar, but the tone intended to be heard. Its a consent battle with our stage volume and the sound engineer who mixes for our shows.
DAVE: We do everything from CCR to Van Halen to Metallica and every thing in between. I feel very fortunate to play with a bunch of guys who are so talented and good at what they do.
ENTERTAINER: What are you currently working on?
BUDDY: Currently we are working on bringing our new bass player, John Hasson, up to speed. John joined us the first of the year and we have been going over our song list for our first gig with John. We dont play any originals so our time spent at rehearsal sessions is comprised of learning new material that we have chosen to add to our song list. We often will learn several new songs in a night.
JOHN: Im working on becoming a better bass player of course and learning all these new songs that Colorblind has in their arsenal. I joined the band the first of this year. The guys really know how to rock and put on a show. Im just thrilled to be a part of it.
ENTERTAINER: What has been your greatest memory as a musician?
BUDDY: Most recently the memories that I have experienced with Colorblind have been performing for several large fund-raiser events. These events are very important and help bring the community together. We organized the fund raising concert for the Playground of Dreams, April 2004 at the Red Lion in Pasco and in September of 2005 we put on a huge fund raising event for the Katrina Hurricane relief effort at Clover Island Inn. This event was televised live on the local Charter cable station here in the Tri-Cities and Yakima. Also, I have to mention that we were the opening band for the 70s country rock band Firefall. That was very special and something that I never expected to happen. Once you have taken the stage with all that gear its hard to go back to the small venues.
BILL: Id agreeFirefall last summer!
JOHN: For me, it was the first song that I was able to figure out on the bass, ZZ Tops, Tush. I realized I could do it. There is nothing more exciting than the energy of a screaming crowd (screaming because they like you, of course).
DAVE: I cant say I have a greatest moment, but I can tell you that Ive had many great moments with this band. We have entertained so many groups of people, and always had a lot of fun. Even the gigs that are black tie and stuffy, we still seem to catch em off guard and get em dancing. Once you have the crowd responding to you and your performance, thats when you feel a bit of happiness and just become part of the moment.
ENTERTAINER: What does the future hold for your career?
BUDDY: Well, the music thing will always be a hobby for me. I would however like to get to a point where we are writing our own music and playing it along side the cover stuff.
JOHN: The skys the limitwherever it goes. I agree with Buddy that this is nothing more than a fun filled hobby that Im so fortunate to be able to do on my off-time from work. It pays for the all that gear I just have to have.
MIKE: The future is the opportunity to continue playing music and mainly having fun doing it. I have always used music as a release to the everyday dealings in life. I know that once a week when the band gets together for rehearsals that I can put the day behind me and enjoy playing music and be with my buddiesmy extended musical family.
ENTERTAINER: Is there anything else youd like to add?
BUDDY: We are the opening act for the band POCO at Clover Island Inn. They are coming to Tri-Cities in August and we have been given the job due to our performance last summer opening for Firefall. We will also be doing some things with the Tri-Cities Fever in-door football team again this year including a pre-game live performance scheduled for April 8th at the Toyota Convention Center. The fun just never stops!
BILL: Checkout our web page at www.musicbycolorblind.com. You can find out where our next gigs are at, leave use feedback, view photos from all our past performances, book the band and keep up on all the news surrounding the band. This year is looking really busy! |
