The Entertainer recently had the chance to sit down with three members of The Shades. The resulting question and answer session is provided for your reading enjoyment.
ENTERTAINER: How did you create your band name.
BOBBY: Believe it or not it actually has nothing to do with sunglasses. It really represents more of the different styles and shades of popular music. I saw an album cover once called Shades of Deep Purple and it just clicked in my mind.
ENTERTAINER: What is the style of music that you play.
BOBBY: Classic Rock and Pop would be an accurate description. Definitely no techno, etc... just great basic groove rock and roll. Were a lot like an early Cream or that kind of thing.
TIM: Id add that were kind of a rootsy rock and blues type group. Id say old-school but not in the sense of being outdatedjust in the way we playwe love to play songs that everyone has heard.
ENTERTAINER: Are you mostly a cover band:
BOBBY: We do play mostly covers in our regular concerts, but we are also working on an upcoming CD of all original music. Well most likely start playing a few more of our original tunes once the CD is finished.
ENTERTAINER: What has been the greatest moment in history for The Shades:
TIM: Back in 2004 we won the Battle of The Bands in the Tri-Cities and got to open for the Classic Rock All Stars. That was probably one of my favorite highlights.
FAITH: Well, Ive only been with the band for a year but I would say it was very memorable to be able to give back to the non-profit organizations and play the SoundByte concert. It helped us to remember to give what we can to the community and assist some great organizations like the Childrens Developmental Center and the Special Olympics.
ENTERTAINER: What does the future hold for the band:
BOBBY: Were pretty secure in the club field as we play about 50 dates a year but what we would love to accomplish now is to get our new album out and make it available through our web site and other outlets.
Tim: We are definitely taking our time with the album. Besides our busy schedules, wed like to make sure that the collection is well thought out and complete before we release it.
ENTERTAINER: Do you write the songs together as a band:
FAITH: We do a little of that as well as writing separately and then bringing the songs to the band for the final touches.
ENTERTAINER: What do The Shades pride themselves the most about:
TIM: We are very involved in making sure we put out a quality product. Were very conscious of the gear we use and make sure that our amps, mics and instruments, etc are all performing at their best so we can put out the very best sound.
FAITH: I would also like to add the fact that we pride ourselves on being more than just musicians. Were really geared towards getting involved in our shows and making them more interactive for the audience. We love to get people up on stage, involved and having a great time.
TIM: To add to that, well actually sacrifice our performance of a song to make sure the audience is having a great time.
ENTERTAINER: Thanks to The Shades for joining The Entertainer for this interview. |
