Let’s Swing With Gotta Dance
Reprinted from November 2005 Issue

-by PAT HORNE
Last month in the October issue of The Entertainer, I spoke to you about the ever so popular dance competition and shows that are so prevalent now. Also, we shared information about the many various categories and levels of dance competitions. This month, I would like to discuss the differences in East and West Coast Swing. These two Swing dances are all-time favorites of many people all over the world. In the following months, I will share with you the many concepts of Ballroom, Latin and Club dances as well. Each Dance has it’s own styling and steps (footwork), unique in their very nature. Hopefully this information will help you to understand the many variations there are to be found in the school of dance.

East Coast Swing Profile
This favorite dance is often referred to as Triple Step Swing (Rock step, Triple step, Triple step). This dance consists of 6 and 8 count rhythms (the 8 count version is known as smooth East Coast, which, incidentally is a favorite of Bobs and mine. It is executed in a circular fashion (left and/or right). Bob will be teaching East Coast Swing in our November Holiday Series at the Richland Community Center. If you want to have fun, we’ll see you there!

West Coast Swing Profile
This Swing Dance also consists of 6 and 8 count patterns and is a bit more complex than East Coast Swing. This dance is done in a slot formation with the woman going forward in a straight line on the one count (no rock step). The gentleman always leads the lady on the first step and then pursues with a variety of moves with his leads.

Buddy and Laurie Schwimmer
West Coast Swing Instructors, Buddy Schwimmer and his wife, Laurie, will be our celebrity stars at the up and coming Razzle Dazzle New Years Eve Gala event. We are so excited and are looking forward to the fun we will have with their attendance (to know them is to love them). Reservations are going fast so call soon to ensure your share of the Razzle Dazzle that comes only once a year!

Bob And Pat’s 25th Year
Our excitement over this event is because of our Celebrities, Buddy and Laurie, coming all the way from Los Angeles to showcase their great talents for you to see and enjoy. We like to call them the King and Queen of Swing. They have been our friends and mentors for 25 years.

Early reservations are very much suggested as we sell out every year. The amenities for you to enjoy are: grand gourmet buffet, party favors, midnight champagne, fantastic door prizes (including out of town trips and dinners), select D.J. dance music and of course Buddy and Laurie. You can’t ask for anything more! $55 includes all of the above—call Pat Horne at 547-9647.

Swango Party Recap
We had a packed house for our recent Swango Workshop featuring Seattle instructors Patti Conley and Tony Azar. This well attended new two hour workshop was held on Saturday October 15th at the Pasco Eagles Lodge. You should know that Swango is a fusion of West Coast Swing and Argentine Tango. Everyone at the event was happy to learn something new—so were we! Following the workshop, we had dinner at the Lodge then we scooted off to the Pasco Red Lion Hotel for a Gotta Dance party! It sure was a fun day and entertaining as well! Tony and Patti will be back soon—excellent teachers at our Gotta Dance events. In case you did not know, Bob and I have put on over sixty dance events, workshops, competitions and more—all right here in the Tri-Cities. I think we have been busy and it has been an experience for the many dancers who have participated along with Gotta Dance. Until next month, when I will share with you more information on the real differences of varieties in the Latin world of dance. I hope to see you at the November Holiday 4 week series (Swing and Latin).
